Hemoglobin and Myoglobin, defination, function, and normal range | study science

Hemoglobin and myoglobin are heme proteins whose physiological importance is principally related to their ability to bind molecular oxygen.

Hemoglobin (Hb) - Hemoglobin is a Heterotetramaric oxygen transport protein found in red blood cells.

Myoglobin (Mb) - Myoglobin is monomeric protein found mainly in muscle tissue where it serves as an intracellular storage site for oxygen.

*Heme: is formed when iron is inserted into the chemical compound protoporphyrin

*Hemin: Normal heme contains iron in the ferrous oxidation state (Fe2+), whereas hemin contains iron in the ferric oxidation state (Fe3+)

Hemoglobin (Hb)

Hb is a oxygen carrying pigment, predominant protein in red blood cell (RBC).

Functions of Hb

1. Hb carries oxygen from lungs to rest of body.

2. It release oxygen to provide energy in process called metabolism.

3. Hb transport carbon dioxide from organs ans tissues back to lungs.

Normal range of Hb

In male 13.8 - 17.2 g/dL

In female 12.1 - 15.1 g/dL

* Anemia -  Anemia is a medical condition in which the red blood cell count or hemoglobin is less than normal.
